Learn for Real, Holford Drive Sports HUB June

Join CQ Members, supporters and guests at Holford Drive Sports HUB in Perry Barr for ‘Learn for Real’ – a series of peer learning events looking at our members’ outstanding practice and experience.

Holford Drive is a Community Sports Hub which aims to improve the health and well being of the local community through the provision of sports and physical activity opportunities. This it does with a commitment to inclusion.

The HUB was formed when the City Council decided to advertise for local clubs and community organisations to form a collective that would take on board full responsibility under a lease for the Holford Drive Playing Fields site, and manage it to promote sports participation. The site had no changing rooms and was generally run down; the Council did not have the resources to make the necessary improvements and manage the improvement of the site. Four anchor clubs came together with Broadway Academy to form the HUB and went on to invest significant time and effort into making grant applications to ensure the £2.3m investment in new facilities took place to make the facility attractive and usable. Each club has nominated two Directors to the non-profit company board which now manages the site.  The site was transferred to the HUB in November 2013 under a Community Asset Transfer.

The HUB is home to Holford Drive Community Tennis Club, Continental Star Football and Cricket Clubs, Aston Amateur Boxing Club and Continental Star Table Tennis Club.  It is the base for many other sporting activities and retains a commitment to enabling everyone in the local community to benefit from involvement in sport.  This Learn for Real session offers participants the chance to learn from the experience and inclusive sports approach at Holford Drive.
