Children In Need

BBC Children in Need makes grants of up to £120,000 over three years to not-for-profit organisations that work with disadvantaged children and young people aged 18 years and under.

Children in Need funds organisations that:

  • Work in the heart of their communities, particularly in times of crisis.
  • Put children and young people at the centre of everything they do, from design to delivery.
  • Address the challenges the children and young people face, build their skills and resilience, empower them and extend their choices in life.
  • Be keen to keep learning about their work so that their ability to make a difference in children and young people’s lives can keep on improving.

There is a list of ten things that make a strong application on the CIN website.

A wide range of non-profit organisations can apply including charities, non-profit companies, co-ops, religious bodies, housing associations and voluntary organisations. Special schools can apply to Children in Need.

There are two main grant streams:

  • project funding – toward the costs of a project or service
  • core funding – toward the costs of an organisation.

There is no deadline for either grant stream. CIN aims to give faster decisions on applications for less than £15,000 project funding. The first step to making a funding bid is to complete an Expression of Interest form available at the website – either for project or core funding. The maximum grant per year is £40,000. The maxium total grant is £120,000 over three years.

An organisation can only hold one grant from Children in Need at a time – either a project grant or a core grant, not both. Children in Need tends to prioritise smaller, local organisations. It will rarely fund Project Costs for organisations with an annual turnover of more than £2million; and it will rarely fund Core Costs for organisations with an annual turnover of more than £1million.

Local branches of national organisations can apply in their own right to Children in Need so lomng as they are independent. That means, they have their own constitution and accounts, their own management committee and are fully responsible for their own finances.
